Aug 9, 2023

Guy Pnini, a true icon of Israeli basketball, has decided to retire after an illustrious 22-season career. Often called the “Ultimate Winner” for his remarkable achievements, Pnini hangs up his basketball boots at 39 years old to embrace the next chapter of his life.

Pnini’s New Journey

Pnini’s transition from player to coach was officially confirmed earlier in the week, as he is set to become an assistant coach under Maccabi head coach Oded Katash. Pnini holds several records as a player.

He holds the record for the most appearances in the local hoops league (521 appearances), among other impressive accolades. He led Maccabi Tel Aviv to the 2014 Euroleague championship, secured 11 Israel State Cups, clinched five domestic league titles, and won four Winner Cup trophies.

Additionally, he triumphed in the ABA League and Balkan League, showcasing his unparalleled skill and leadership. Reflecting on this significant moment, Pnini said. “Today, I am ending a significant chapter in my life – retiring as a player.”

Even though his journey began as a young boy with dreams of wearing the Maccabi Tel Aviv jersey, he’s completed that dream and now transitions into a new role. During the announcement, Pnini acknowledged the highs and lows of his career, stating that they shaped him into the person he is today. Maccabi Tel Aviv holds a special place in Pnini’s heart, as he spent most of his career there.

He played a pivotal role in the team’s successes, earning the respect and admiration of fans and fellow players. Shimon Mizrahi, the club’s chairman, praised Pnini for his wisdom and loyalty to the team, predicting that he’ll become one of the greatest coaches in Israeli basketball.

Embracing The Next Chapter

Oded Katash, the head coach, expressed his excitement about Pnini joining the coaching staff. Katash recognizes Pnini’s deep understanding of the game and his potential to contribute significantly to the team’s success.

Pnini’s journey began with Maccabi Ra’anana in 2001 before moving on to Bnei Hasharon and Hapoel Jerusalem. His career led him to Serbia and Cyprus before returning to Israel and Maccabi Tel Aviv, where he ultimately made his mark.

Pnini’s retirement also stirred memories of his controversial moments on the court, including instances of trash-talking that sometimes crossed boundaries. He acknowledged his mistakes and the lessons he learned from them, saying they represent an essential part of growth and self-improvement.

Pnini has significantly impacted Israeli basketball and has become a role model for young players. The Israeli basketball icon has also helped to raise the profile of Israeli basketball internationally.
