In a recent statement, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak emphasized the importance of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, highlighting the necessity of releasing all individuals captured by Hamas during the October 7 assault on Israel.

Release of all Captives

Sunak described the temporary ceasefire as essential and urged for the release of all captives. The ceasefire, eagerly awaited, commenced on Friday morning. It involves an agreement where Hamas has committed to release 50 out of approximately 240 captives in Gaza. In exchange, Palestinians detained in Israel will be freed.

Sunak expressed gratitude towards Qatar and Egypt for their pivotal role in the diplomatic efforts leading to this agreement. The deal is also expected to facilitate additional humanitarian aid to Gaza. This ceasefire marks a potential significant break in the conflict that began with Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7.

Humanitarian Pause

In a tweet, Sunak stated: “This humanitarian pause is crucial to ending the suffering of those held by Hamas and to allow crucial aid into Gaza. I am grateful to Qatar, Egypt, and others for their rigorous diplomatic work. Our efforts will continue until every captive is safely returned.”

UK Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron is continuing his Middle East visit on Friday, intending to meet Palestinian leaders and pledge an additional £30 million in aid for Gaza. During his visit to the Occupied Palestinian Territories, he will meet leaders and aid agencies working in Gaza, advocating for adherence to the ceasefire from all parties.

His discussions will center on how the UK can contribute to alleviating the hardships faced by Gaza’s populace, who have endured severe conditions due to the Israeli military’s actions. The ceasefire paves the way for increased humanitarian aid to the region.

Lord Cameron is urging all involved parties to work towards the release of every captive, following his discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Isaac Herzog.

Temporary Hostage Deal Ceasefire

The ceasefire commenced at 7am local time (5am GMT). The first group of captives, comprising women and children, is expected to be released by Hamas around 4pm local time (2pm GMT), as part of the 50 individuals to be freed during the four-day ceasefire, as stated by Qatari officials.

Hamas has announced the release of 150 Palestinian prisoners by Israel as part of the ceasefire arrangement.
