Israel’s Shin Bet security agency has confirmed that Yair Netanyahu, the son of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, was urgently evacuated back to Israel after authorities identified what they described as a “significant threat” to his safety.
“There was indeed a significant threat of harm to Yair Netanyahu,” the Shin Bet said in a statement provided to Israeli media. “In light of this, and following a situation assessment, a decision was made to urgently evacuate him, together with the security team, back to Israel.”
The confirmation is significant because it establishes for the first time through an official Israeli security body that the threat against Yair Netanyahu was considered serious enough to require his urgent removal from abroad.
But it also leaves unanswered some of the most dramatic claims surrounding the case.
What the Shin Bet confirmed, and what it did not
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed earlier this week that Iran had targeted one of his sons.
“Iran targeted one of my sons. Iran tried to murder him,” Netanyahu said during an interview with Israel’s Channel 14, without identifying which son.
Days later, Newsmax reported, citing an unnamed U.S. law enforcement source, that the target was Yair Netanyahu, who had been living in Hallandale Beach in South Florida.
According to that report, Israeli intelligence discovered the alleged plot in December 2025 and believed Iranian operatives were already in the Miami area conducting surveillance of Netanyahu’s residence and movements. He was reportedly ordered to leave immediately and returned to Israel.
The Shin Bet has now confirmed the central elements of that story: Yair Netanyahu faced a significant threat and was urgently evacuated to Israel together with his security team.
However, the agency’s published statement did not identify Iran as the source of the threat. It did not describe an assassination plot, say that an Iranian cell was operating in Florida, or confirm that an attack was about to take place.
It also did not say when the evacuation occurred or identify Miami, Florida or the United States as the location from which Netanyahu was evacuated.
Those distinctions matter because other Israeli security officials have offered a considerably less dramatic account of the intelligence.
Israeli security officials dispute claims of a last minute attack
Before the Shin Bet issued its confirmation, Israeli security officials told Globes that the intelligence concerned a broader Iranian intention to harm senior Israeli figures, including the prime minister’s son.
They said they were not aware of a terror cell being arrested or an attack against Yair Netanyahu being thwarted in Florida.
“We are not aware here of any last minute thwarting that was about to be carried out,” the officials said.
According to that account, security authorities received general intelligence concerning an intention to target senior Israelis and Yair Netanyahu. Rather than take the risk, his security was reinforced and he was instructed to return to Israel.
That version does not contradict the Shin Bet’s acknowledgement of a “significant threat.” But it does conflict with some of the more dramatic descriptions that have emerged since Netanyahu first revealed the affair.
Yair Netanyahu himself has gone substantially further.
In a complaint filed against Haaretz journalist Uri Misgav, Netanyahu alleged that Iranian intelligence operatives reached the entrance of his residence in the Miami area and carried out a targeted attempt on his life.
That claim has not been confirmed by the Shin Bet or a U.S. law enforcement agency.
Months under Israeli military censorship
The case also has an unusual censorship history.
Israeli media organizations including Channel 12 and Channel 13 reported that information about the alleged plot had been prohibited from publication for months by Israel’s military censor.
That changed after Benjamin Netanyahu discussed the threat himself during his Channel 14 interview on August 24.
The prime minister used the incident to defend the extensive security provided to members of his family.
“This security is not a luxury,” Netanyahu said. “Without sufficient protection, they may succeed.”
The subsequent Newsmax report identified Yair Netanyahu as the son allegedly targeted and placed the incident in South Florida.
The Shin Bet has now officially confirmed his identity and the decision to evacuate him.
Yair Netanyahu is now in Israel
Yair Netanyahu had spent extended periods living in South Florida in recent years and was accompanied there by Israeli security personnel.
Newsmax reported that he returned to Israel following the threat and is now living in the country. Israeli outlets including Ynet have reported the same.
His presence in Israel this year is independently documented. Netanyahu appeared personally at Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court in July during legal proceedings involving Misgav, accompanied by his lawyer and several security guards.
The precise timeline of his departure from Florida remains unclear.
Newsmax placed the urgent evacuation in December 2025, but the Shin Bet did not provide a date. Misgav has publicly disputed that timeline, claiming Netanyahu continued to spend time in Miami during January and February 2026.
No publicly available Shin Bet statement resolves that discrepancy.
Security around Netanyahu family has become a political issue
The revelation comes as protection for members of the Netanyahu family has become the subject of a broader political dispute in Israel.
In July, the ministerial committee responsible for Shin Bet affairs approved continued security for Yair and his brother Avner for five years, regardless of the outcome of Israel’s upcoming election. Sara Netanyahu was granted protection for the remainder of her husband’s lifetime.
Kan reported in 2025 that security for Yair Netanyahu while abroad was estimated to cost approximately NIS 4 million to NIS 6 million annually.
Opposition leader Yair Lapid recently criticized the Shin Bet’s decision not to provide protection to former IDF chief of staff Gadi Eisenkot, one of Netanyahu’s leading political rivals.
“Yair Netanyahu is fully protected in Miami, but Gadi Eisenkot, a former chief of staff, is not protected,” Lapid said. “It’s obvious he must be protected.”
Netanyahu has said he personally asked Shin Bet chief David Zini to ensure appropriate security is provided to any candidate for prime minister who requires it.
A confirmed threat, with important questions still unanswered
The Shin Bet’s intervention settles one important part of the story.
There was a significant threat against Yair Netanyahu, and Israeli security authorities considered it serious enough to urgently evacuate him to Israel with his protection team.
But the confirmation is narrower than some of the reports surrounding the affair.
The Shin Bet has not publicly identified Iran as responsible, confirmed that an Iranian cell was operating near Netanyahu’s Florida residence, or said an assassination attempt was thwarted at the last moment.
Israeli security officials have instead described the intelligence as general and said they know of no imminent attack that was stopped.
The result is a clearer, but still incomplete, picture: the threat and emergency evacuation are now officially confirmed. The dramatic details of exactly what Israeli intelligence discovered, and how close anyone came to carrying out an attack, remain unverified.
