Video of Police at UK Flag Display Raises Questions About Policing Priorities

Tommy Robinson has shared a video of police officers speaking with people on a residential street where flags are displayed. He used the footage to question why police were attending the scene while, he argued, more serious threats demanded their attention.
“24hrs in ‘Modern Britain’,” he wrote. His post brought together the police response to flag raisers, the release of terrorism suspects and the detention of activist Danny Tommo.
Police and the flag campaign
The video shows marked police vehicles arriving on the street before the camera moves towards a group of officers speaking with people nearby. Flags can be seen along the road. Robinson described the police presence as an effort to stop “patriots raising flags.”
For supporters of the flag campaign, the issue extends beyond this encounter. They see police interventions and arrests involving flag campaigners as a response to displays of national pride. Disputes over flags placed on lampposts and other public property have become a flashpoint, with campaigners objecting when authorities step in.

Robinson also pointed to Danny Tommo, whose legal name is Daniel Thomas. Thomas was remanded in custody after appearing at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court on September 25. He pleaded not guilty to criminal damage over an alleged incident involving a boat in the English Channel and to a separate charge concerning disclosure of his phone PIN. His case is awaiting trial.
Tommo’s detention has drawn protests from supporters, including people who gathered outside a police investigation centre in Basingstoke calling for his release. Robinson attended his court hearing.
Suspects released on bail
The other case in Robinson’s post concerns five men arrested near RAF Fairford on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act and preparation of a terrorist act. Counter Terrorism Policing said on September 28 that the men were being released on police bail with restrictions on their movement and contact with others. The investigation is continuing.
Robinson’s message is a criticism of those decisions taken together. By placing the police video alongside Tommo’s detention and the Fairford bail decision, he asked his followers to consider what Britain’s authorities are choosing to pursue, and how firmly.
