Eyal Zamir Orders Faster Robotics Deployment After Northern Command Demonstration

Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir ordered commanders to accelerate the integration of robotic capabilities after troops demonstrated a new combat team model during his November 4 visit to Northern Command.

The model came from troops already operating in the northern sector. The 769th Brigade and 869th Field Intelligence Battalion presented it during a visit to the Khiam area, where Zamir met brigade commanders and assessed the position of the 91st Division, the military said.

Machines Ahead of the Troops

The IDF's account describes robotic and technological systems operating ahead of soldiers and alongside them. Zamir connected that arrangement to a familiar defensive responsibility: Israeli forces stand between the civilian population and threats across the border.

Moving machines further forward adds another layer to that approach. In the chief of staff's assessment, the model improves operational effectiveness while strengthening protection for the people carrying out the mission. His instruction was to speed up the incorporation of those capabilities into combat forces.

Northern Command chief Rafi Milo, Ground Forces commander Nadav Lotan and 91st Division commander Yuval Gaz accompanied Zamir. The presence of both the regional command and the Ground Forces leadership placed the demonstration within a wider discussion of how the army equips its fighting units.

A Border Mission Against Hezbollah

Zamir described the 91st Division as the forward defensive line for northern residents. He said the division was developing defenses in front of the communities and that changing conditions would not alter the army's responsibility to protect them.

He also warned that any Hezbollah attempt to rebuild terrorist infrastructure, strengthen its capabilities or threaten northern communities would meet an immediate and forceful response. That warning concerns the same border environment in which Israel has confronted Hezbollah's explosive drone infrastructure.

The chief of staff characterized Hezbollah as an Iranian proxy and said its wartime conduct had harmed Lebanon and its citizens. Those remarks accompanied the military demonstration, linking the discussion of equipment to the threat facing the units using it.

Robots Already Enter Dangerous Spaces

The Jerusalem Post reported that the army frequently sends robots into combat spaces before soldiers to reduce their exposure. It described the military's use of specialist robots to enter tunnels and potentially booby trapped buildings, as well as remotely controlled ground vehicles.

These tasks help explain the emphasis on force protection. A machine can be sent into a dangerous space while its operators remain elsewhere. The model shown near Khiam brings the relationship between troops and robotic equipment into the organization of a combat team.

A Wider Shift in Military Technology

Two days before the northern visit, Zamir addressed an army conference on artificial intelligence. The Times of Israel quoted remarks released by the military in which he called for manned units to fight in coordination with unmanned systems and placed robotics within the IDF's innovation plans.

The current push therefore spans both battlefield organization and the skills needed to operate new systems, alongside changes such as Israel's new artillery training infrastructure. On November 4, Zamir specifically praised the close cooperation between Northern Command and the Ground Forces.

He credited Northern Command with degrading Hezbollah's capabilities over three years of fighting and told the commanders that the army was prepared to deepen those achievements if required.
