Citizen Osama Director Worked for Islamic Jihad Affiliated Channel

The Palestinian Oscar submission is moving through international festivals. Its director’s documented television work needs to be distinguished from allegations of personal membership in an armed group.

Palestine Today TV’s own archive identifies Ahmed Hassouna, director of Citizen Osama, as one of its filmmakers in accounts of awards from 2014 and 2015. The Committee to Protect Journalists describes the broadcaster as affiliated with Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Those sources establish a professional link, without proving a personal militant role.

What the channel’s records establish

In a December 23, 2023 retrospective, Palestine Today identified Hassouna as a filmmaker working for the channel when listing awards received in 2014 and 2015. The wording concerns filmmaking for the channel. Israel News Pulse could not independently find evidence establishing his exact employment dates or personal membership in Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

Palestinian Islamic Jihad is designated a terrorist organisation by the United States and European Union, as Treasury and EU Council documents confirm. In 2016, the IDF described Palestine Today as part of Islamic Jihad, in a statement reported by the Times of Israel. A channel affiliation and an individual’s role remain different questions.

The people credited on the film

Venice’s official page credits Hassouna as director and Osama Al-Ashi as the main subject. It lists Laura Nikolov for Coorigines Production, Rashid Masharawi for the Masharawi Fund, and Hassouna for Filcam Media. Producer Coorigines lists International Media Support and Rome’s MedFilm Festival among the supporters. Those credits do not specify how much money each contributed.

Venice programmed the Arabic language Palestinian and French production in Venice Open, out of competition. The film’s promotional materials describe Al-Ashi’s family life and reporting from Gaza. These are descriptions of its focus, rather than an independent audit of every claim made on screen.

The separate allegation about Al-Ashi

In July 2025, media watchdog CAMERA alleged that Al-Ashi, also a producer of Gaza: Doctors Under Attack, had shared social media material praising attacks on Israelis. Israel News Pulse could not independently authenticate the underlying posts in this review.

Channel 4’s Louisa Compton had defended broadcasting Doctors Under Attack in June 2025, citing editorial and compliance checks. That statement predates the CAMERA release and concerns a different film. Israel News Pulse could not find public replies from Hassouna, Al-Ashi or the four festivals addressing the allegations examined here.

Oscar selection and Academy rules

The Palestinian Culture Ministry announced on August 31 that Citizen Osama was its choice for the international feature category at the 99th Oscars in 2027. A national submission is not an Academy nomination. The Academy’s current rules allow documentaries and provide a country committee route, plus a separate route for winners of specified major festival awards.

A Venice screening out of competition does not meet that festival award route. Eligibility and any later Oscar nomination remain decisions for the Academy. The distinction matters when a festival catalogue describes a film as a country’s Oscar entry.

Four festivals list the film

Chicago’s festival announces a screening on October 18 at 6:15 p.m. local time at the Gene Siskel Film Center, with producer Laura Nikolov scheduled to attend. AFI lists the film in Los Angeles on October 21, Budapest’s BIFF on October 25, and Amsterdam’s IDFA in its 2026 Best of Fests programme. Those listings confirm programming, rather than authentication of every claim about the film’s personnel.
