A Jewish man from Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood was hospitalized after being stabbed in the back in Manhattan’s Diamond District on Wednesday evening. Manhattan Shomrim said it was working with the New York Police Department’s Hate Crimes Task Force, as investigators examined a possible antisemitic motive. The victim was reported to be in stable condition.

Details carried by The Jerusalem Post on Thursday described the victim as a Chabad Hasid and identified the attacker as a woman. The investigation remains focused on establishing what happened and locating the suspect. A possible hate motive is being examined; it has not been established as a final finding in the case.

Attack near Fifth Avenue

The stabbing occurred at approximately 5:45 p.m. near Fifth Avenue and West 47th Street, according to COLlive, which carried an Israel National News report. Initial accounts said the woman approached the victim from behind before fleeing west toward Sixth Avenue. The location places the attack in Midtown Manhattan, separate from the Brooklyn neighborhood where the victim lives.

Hatzalah emergency medical personnel treated the wounded man and transported him to Bellevue Hospital, the report said. The available accounts described his condition as stable but did not provide a detailed account of his injuries or treatment. His name was not made public in the reports, and no statement from the victim was included.

Witnesses and camera footage sought

Manhattan Shomrim appealed to anyone who saw the attack or had relevant recordings to assist the investigation. The request covered security cameras, dashboard cameras and mobile phone footage. Such material could help establish the sequence of events and the attacker’s movements, including what occurred before the stabbing and the direction taken afterward.

COLlive reported an initial description of a woman believed to be in her thirties, about five feet nine inches tall, wearing blue jeans and white sneakers, with a dark sweater around her waist. That description forms part of the search and does not identify a particular person. No arrest was announced in those accounts.

Possible antisemitic motive under examination

The Jerusalem Post attributed the involvement of the NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force to Manhattan Shomrim’s statement. The community safety organization’s participation and the examination of a possible antisemitic motive are central to the case. They do not, on their own, establish what the attacker said, what prompted the assault or whether any wider organization was involved.

No verified account in the cited reports described a political slogan or linked the suspect to a terrorist organization. Establishing a motive will depend on evidence connected to this attack. The victim’s Jewish identity is a relevant part of the investigation, while the responsibility for the stabbing remains with the person who carried it out.

Jewish safety remains a wider concern

The attack comes against a documented backdrop of antisemitic crime in New York. At a July 2 city briefing, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said 178 confirmed antisemitic hate crimes had been recorded during the first six months of 2026, compared with 174 in the same period a year earlier. She said antisemitic incidents represented 55 percent of all confirmed hate crimes.

Those figures describe an earlier reporting period and do not include Wednesday’s stabbing. They help explain the attention given to the safety of Jewish New Yorkers, without settling the motive in an individual case. The immediate priorities remain the injured man’s recovery, identifying the attacker and obtaining the witness accounts and recordings sought by Manhattan Shomrim and the police.
