Rocket and Missile Alerts in Israel: What Visitors Need to Know

Know your alert area and your nearest suitable shelter before you need them. Home Front Command's instructions for the specific incident take priority, including any requirement to wait for an explicit all clear.

A visitor does not need to memorize every Israeli emergency term. The useful first steps are practical: identify the protected space at your accommodation, check the time available to reach it, and set up an official source of alerts. Ask the host to show the route and door before an emergency, especially if you arrive late or need help with stairs.

The guidance below draws on Home Front Command material published by the IDF. It describes protective actions, not a live assessment of whether travel or a particular activity is permitted today. Check the current instructions for your location whenever plans change.

Set Up Official Alerts

Home Front Command's official app delivers location based alerts and messages for selected areas of interest. Allow the permissions the app requires and distinguish an alert for your current location from one for an area you chose to follow. Keep the phone charged and check that notifications are audible.

A May 2026 app update introduced yellow for preparation, red for protective action and green for the end of an incident. Read the accompanying instruction rather than relying on color alone. Sirens and the National Emergency Portal are additional official warning channels.

Advance warnings are not guaranteed. Home Front Command's March 2026 clarification says an alert can arrive shortly after a preliminary message, or without one. If told to improve your position, move toward the best available protection; when an alert arrives, enter shelter immediately within your area's protection time.

Check the Time for Your Exact Location

The time to reach protection depends on the alert area. Home Front Command's guidance describes 90 seconds in many parts of Israel and shorter intervals near borders, including immediate action, 15, 30, 45 or 60 seconds. These are examples, not a single national countdown.

Look up the locality, and the street where a city is divided into several zones, through the official alert service. Recheck after moving to another town or planning an outing. The shelter that works for your hotel may be irrelevant at a beach or a roadside stop.

Choose somewhere you can actually reach in time. Walk the route beforehand, clear obstacles and account for anyone who moves slowly. Do not spend the warning interval looking for an ideal shelter that is too far away.

Mamad, Public Shelter or Stairwell

A mamad is a reinforced protected room inside an apartment. A mamak is a shared protected space on a floor. Home Front Command prioritizes designated protected spaces and suitable shelters that can be reached within the available time.

A public shelter is a miklat. Ask where the entrance is and confirm access before depending on it. In a designated protected room, follow the instructions for securing its protective door and windows; ask the accommodation manager to demonstrate the fittings.

If no designated space is reachable, an internal stairwell may be the next option. Home Front Command's guidance excludes exposed ground level and the top two floors in taller buildings; in a three story building, the middle floor is preferred. Ask the host to identify the appropriate landing.

If those options are unavailable, choose an internal room with as few exterior walls, windows and openings as possible. Avoid kitchens, bathrooms and toilets, and stay below window level against an internal wall, away from the doorway.

Outdoors or on the Road

In a built up area, enter the nearest suitable building and reach its protected interior. In open terrain, when no shelter can be reached in time, lie on the ground and protect your head with your hands. Do not remain standing to watch interceptions.

For someone driving in Israel, Home Front Command instructs drivers to pull over safely, leave the vehicle and reach a nearby building if possible. If a building cannot be reached in time, move away from the vehicle, lie down and cover your head.

If leaving the vehicle is impossible, stop, turn off the engine, crouch below window level and protect your head. A car's windows and body do not provide shelter equivalent to a protected room. When using public transport, follow the driver's or staff's emergency instructions; do not step onto railway tracks.

Stay Protected Until the Instruction Allows Exit

Older general guidance specifies ten minutes in protection after a rocket alert, because further launches and falling fragments remain dangerous. That is not permission to leave during an incident with a longer stay instruction.

Home Front Command's newer missile guidance says to remain protected until a message announces the incident's end. Follow the current instruction and any further alerts. A quiet street, an explosion or a neighbor leaving is not an all clear.

Keep away from fallen objects and interception debris. Do not touch or collect them, and do not gather at impact sites. Report hazards to the authorities. For guidance, Home Front Command's information line in Israel is 104.

Travel Plans and Insurance Questions

Check official instructions before outings and ask accommodation staff how they relay updates to guests. Home Front Command determines protective guidance; it does not determine the terms of your travel insurance.

Ask your insurer directly about medical care, interruption, cancellation, evacuation and any war or terrorism exclusions, and obtain its answer in writing. These are questions to resolve with the provider, not a statement that a particular policy covers them. Keep the insurer's assistance details available offline alongside your accommodation address.
