Israel and Morocco Agree to Upgrade Missions to Embassies

Israel and Morocco agreed on September 16, 2026, to upgrade their diplomatic missions to full embassies and appoint ambassadors. Foreign ministers Gideon Sa’ar and Nasser Bourita met in New York with US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz.
The agenda beyond embassies
According to Israel’s Foreign Ministry and reporting by The Times of Israel, the agenda also covered stronger flight connections, senior-level visits and completing investment-protection and double-taxation agreements by the end of 2026.
From agreement to implementation
The decision advances relations renewed in 2020 through the Abraham Accords process. For Israel, it strengthens a North African partnership through permanent diplomatic institutions and working channels. Once completed and effective, investment and tax arrangements could also make the relationship more useful to businesses.
What the announcement does not yet show
Agreement and implementation remain distinct. The announcement does not establish that every embassy has opened, that ambassadors have taken up their posts or that a new flight schedule is operating. The diplomatic commitment is concrete; the delivery timetable for each component depends on the work that follows.
