Israel Seeks Lebanese Checkpoints to Keep Hezbollah Out of Iran War

Israel has asked Lebanon to deploy troops and establish checkpoints in areas where Hezbollah operatives live, seeking to prevent another front if fighting with Iran resumes, Kan reported.

The request was passed through American mediators, according to Kan's Monday evening account, cited by Israel National News and The Times of Israel. An Israeli security source linked the demand to concern that pressure from Tehran could draw Hezbollah into renewed fighting.

A Request for Action on the Ground

The reported Israeli message calls for the Lebanese army to redeploy and place checkpoints in areas associated with Hezbollah operatives. It asks Beirut to use its own security forces to help prevent the terrorist organization from opening a front against Israel.

Israel also warned the Lebanese government that a Hezbollah attack would bring renewed fighting in Lebanon. The message combines a preventive request to the Lebanese authorities with a warning about the consequences if the organization enters the conflict.

Kan's account is a report of diplomatic and security contacts. The action it describes is Israel's request for a deployment, with the prospective checkpoints intended to affect Hezbollah's freedom of movement.

Iran Shapes the Northern Calculation

The reported concern connects two theaters that Israeli defense planners have to consider together: Iran and Lebanon. Hezbollah's capacity to attack from the north adds another dimension to Israel's preparations for possible renewed fighting with Iran.

The request to Beirut seeks to address that threat before a new round begins. Its immediate focus is the Lebanese army's presence in relevant areas and its ability to exercise control there.

Israel National News said the warning was delivered despite direct talks between Israel and Lebanon in recent months. The diplomatic channel and the military warning are therefore operating at the same time, with American mediation carrying the message to Beirut.

The Lebanese Army's Role

The demand sits within a longstanding international framework that assigns security authority to the Lebanese state. UN Security Council Resolution 1701, adopted in 2006, calls for the government to extend control across Lebanese territory and for weapons to be held with its consent.

For the area between the Blue Line and the Litani River, the resolution envisages armed personnel and equipment belonging only to the Lebanese government and UNIFIL. The Blue Line marks the line of Israeli withdrawal identified by the United Nations in 2000.

UNIFIL describes its role as monitoring and reporting violations and helping the Lebanese armed forces implement the resolution. The responsibility for state control lies with Lebanon's government and security institutions.

Weapons and Deployment Remain Central

Israel's latest reported request follows continuing attention to how Lebanon handles Hezbollah explosives. Checkpoints, troop deployments and control of weapons address different parts of the same practical question: whether the Lebanese state can restrict the organization's military activity.

The UN Security Council's 2025 Resolution 2790 urged international support for the Lebanese armed forces, including equipment, material and finance, to sustain deployments south of the Litani. It also called for assistance in establishing an area free of unauthorized weapons.

That resolution specifically encouraged UNIFIL operations aimed at discovering tunnels and weapons caches, alongside support for the Lebanese army's ability to implement Resolution 1701.
